Persistence of environmental DNA in marine systems [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2018
AbstractAs environmental DNA (eDNA) becomes an increasingly valuable resource for marine ecosystem monitoring, understanding variation in its persistence across contrasting environments is critical. Here, we quantify the breakdown of macrobial eDNA over a spatio-temporal axis of locally extreme conditions, varying from ocean-influenced offshore to ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Towards a Comprehensive DNA Barcode Library of Stenochironomus Kieffer, 1919 (Diptera: Chironomidae) from China

open access: yesDiversity
The adoption of DNA-based assessments for biodiversity monitoring has been on the rise. However, the effectiveness of DNA-based taxonomic assignments heavily relies on the availability and reliability of DNA barcode libraries. There is growing demand for

Coral monitoring in northwest Australia with environmental DNA metabarcoding using a curated reference database for optimized detection

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, 2022
The need for efficient and more accurate ways of monitoring threatened ecosystems is becoming increasingly urgent as climate change intensifies. Coral reefs are an example of an ecosystem in crisis, with widespread declines in coral cover and diversity ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Charge-Transfer Matrix Elements by FMO-LCMO Approach: Hole Transfer in DNA with Parameter Tuned Range-Separated DFT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A scheme for computing charge-transfer matrix elements with the linear combination of fragment molecular orbitals and the 'nonempirically tuned range-separated' density functional is presented.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

A qPCR Assay for the Threatened Pilbara Olive Python (Liasis olivaceus barroni)

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
The Pilbara olive python (Liasis olivaceus barroni) is endemic to the Pilbara region of Western Australia and listed as threatened. Despite being a priority conservation target, they are difficult to monitor as their cryptic nature complicates ...

DNA methylation and socioeconomic status in a Mexican-American birth cohort. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background: Maternal social environmental stressors during pregnancy are associated with adverse birth and child developmental outcomes, and epigenetics has been proposed as a possible mechanism for such relationships.
