Stochastic Forces in Microbial Community Assembly: Founding Community Size Governs Divergent Ecological Trajectories

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 5, May 2026.
The processes driving community assembly are broadly categorised into deterministic and stochastic ones. With a multi‐replicated experimental design, we quantified the extent to which stochasticity at initial stages of community assembly could drive divergence into alternative ecological trajectories.

The Fish Behind Fish Feed: Rethinking Transparency Using DNA Tools

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 3, Page 771-780, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is now the fastest growing food sector and may be a promising solution to increasing seafood demands. Yet, carnivorous aquaculture species such as salmon and seabass continue to rely on fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO), which are derived largely from pelagic fish that are sometimes key to the food security of some coastal nations. Biowaste Composting as a Sustainable Platform for Bacterial CO Production: Evidence From cooS Gene Expression and Microbial Community Profiling

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study demonstrates, for the first time, the expression of the cooS gene during composting, confirming microbial CO production under mesophilic conditions. The results highlight composting as a novel waste‐to‐biochemicals process, offering a sustainable, low‐carbon pathway for generating carbon monoxide via bacterial CO dehydrogenase activity ...

Floral resource strips enhance parasitoid abundance and diversity in apple orchards and promote agroecological advances in a South African biosphere reserve

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 3, Page 559-572, May 2026.
Floral resource strips within apple orchards increased parasitoid abundance and influenced community composition, enhancing local biodiversity in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve's transition zone. Ruderal and natural fynbos habitats supported higher parasitoid richness and abundance, emphasising the importance of conserving semi‐natural habitats ...

Morphology, Ultrastructure, and Classification of Barthelonids (Metamonada Incertae Sedis): With Descriptions of Microbarthelona Gen. Nov., and Parabarthelona Gen. Nov.

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 73, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Barthelona is a genus of anaerobic flagellates that forms a sister lineage to Fornicata along with Skoliomonas. Although “Barthelona spp.” are known to separate into three distinct lineages, their detailed morphology has not been examined, and their taxonomic classification is incomplete.
