Lower Late Development Rate of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Patients with Lower Mechanical Power or Driving Pressure

open access: yesDiagnostics
For patients on ventilation without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there are, as yet, limited data on ventilation strategies. We hypothesized that driving pressure (DP) and mechanical power (MP) may play key roles for the late development of

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Rolling out a new Driving Simulator Concept - Design and Challenges of Wheeled Mobile Driving Simulators

open access: yes, 2021
Wheeled mobile driving simulators (WMDS) intend to cue the motion of road vehicles by moving a tire-bound, electrically driven, omnidirectional platform.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

The impact of pneumoperitoneum and steep Trendelenburg positioning on novel oxygenation and saturation indices in robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies: A prospective observational study

open access: yesSaudi Journal of Anaesthesia
Background: Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) poses challenges in ventilation and oxygenation due to steep Trendelenburg positioning and pneumoperitoneum.

Impact of Different Tidal Volume Levels at Low Mechanical Power on Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury in Rats

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Tidal volume (VT) has been considered the main determinant of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). Recently, experimental studies have suggested that mechanical power transferred from the ventilator to the lungs is the promoter of VILI. We hypothesized

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Individualized positive end-expiratory pressure guided by driving pressure in robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: a prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundDespite the widespread use of lung-protective ventilation in general anesthesia, the optimal positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) remains uncertain.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
