Embryo transfer in dromedary camels

Abstract Embryo recovery rates per attempt from naturally mated camels that superovulated following treatment with FSH or eCG were 261/68 (384%) and 193/84 (230%) respectively. The rate was affected by interval between ovulation and collection, male fertility and reproductive characteristics of the donor.

Uterine prolapse in 2 dromedary camels.

Two cases of uterine prolapse in dromedary camels in a herd with concomitant cases of white muscle disease are described. Serum selenium and glutathione peroxidase in whole blood were investigated in both patients and showed statistical difference compared with a control group.

It was shown that the effects of halothane anaesthesia in the dromedary are similar to those of large domestic ruminants. As a general rule the equipment and techniques used for adult cattle may also be used in the dromedary. Endotracheal intubation may be more difficult in camels because of their narrow oral cavities.
