Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Drying of Heat Sensitive Materials of High Moisture Content in Mechanically Spouted Bed of Inert Particles

open access: yes, 2008
In drying operation the material characteristics such as heat sensitivity, moisture content and particle size are of great importance, which should be taken into account in selection of proper design and conditions for the process.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Use of Agave Bagasse and Lactococcus lactis in Sourdough Production: Drying Effects on Bioactive Compounds

open access: yesFoods
The wastage of by-products generated in the food industry is an issue that should be addressed by determining a second use for these products, with sourdough fermentation being the most popular technology used.

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Modeling drying and energy performance of industrial through-dryers

open access: yes, 2008
A model of an industrial through-dryer for production of tissue paper was developed. The model can be used to predict the performance of a dryer section of an industrial through-drying machine consisting of one or more through-drying rolls separated by ...

Effects of Moderate Electric Field Pretreatment on the Efficiency and Nutritional Quality of Hot Air-Dried Apple Slices

open access: yesFoods
This study investigates the effects of electric field pretreatment parameters such as electric field strength (0.1–0.2 kV/cm), waveform (sinusoidal vs. square), and application mode (continuous vs.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.
