Bidirectional Causal Relationships Between Obesity and Executive Function in Children and Adolescents: A Genetic Instrumental Variable Analysis

open access: yesDevelopmental Science, Volume 29, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines the causal relationship between obesity and executive function (EF)—including cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory—using genetic instrumental variable analysis. A bidirectional two‐stage least squares (2SLS) analysis was conducted in 406 children and adolescents.

Resource Availability Overrides Predator Presence in Mosquito Oviposition Habitat Selection

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 5, Page 424-435, May 2026.
Gravid Culex quinquefasciatus balance predation risk against resource availability when selecting oviposition sites. In outdoor mesocosms, we factorially manipulated sugarcane jaggery (resource) and notonectid predators (adult vs. nymph; caged vs. free‐swimming) across 2 years.

On the Optimal Selection of Mel‐Frequency Cepstral Coefficients for Voice Deepfake Detection

open access: yesExpert Systems, Volume 43, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The continuous evolution of techniques for generating manipulated audio, known as voice deepfakes, and the widespread availability of tools that produce convincing forgeries have created an urgent need for reliable detection methods. This work considers the dimensionality of Mel‐Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) as a core design variable

Animal Naming Test Can Identify Covert Hepatic Encephalopathy in Patients With Cirrhosis With Limited Influence From Age or Educational Level

open access: yesHepatology Research, Volume 56, Issue 5, Page 683-691, May 2026.
Adjustments for age and educational level in animal naming test cause patients’ discomfort and limit its use in clinical practice. In our study, animal naming test was useful in identifying covert hepatic encephalopathy and its adjustment using age and educational level had limited incremental value the diagnostic ability.

Trajectories of childhood adversity, social welfare dependence in young adulthood, and the mediating role of mental health problems: a Danish population‐based cohort study

open access: yesJournal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Volume 67, Issue 5, Page 707-717, May 2026.
Background Childhood adversity is associated with increased risks of long‐term social welfare dependence in young adulthood. Mental health problems may mediate this relation, but evidence remains lacking. Methods 613,643 individuals from the Danish Life Course cohort (DANLIFE) were categorized into five trajectory groups based on their annual exposure ...

Viable but Nonculturable State, a Survival Strategy for Salmonella in Aquatic Environments

open access: yesWater and Environment Journal, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 183-202, May 2026.
Transition of Salmonella from a culturable state to a viable but nonculturable state under various environmental stresses and current methods for detecting viable Salmonella in environmental samples. ABSTRACT In the relentless battle for survival, Salmonella has evolved mechanisms to withstand harsh conditions such as extreme temperatures, fluctuating ...
