As-cast acicular ductile aluminum cast iron
Journal of Iron and Steel Research International, 2009Abstract The effects of nickel (2.2%) and molybdenum (0.6%) additions on the kinetics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of ductile aluminum cast iron were studied under the as-cast and tempered conditions. Test bars machined from cast to size samples were used for mechanical and metallurgical studies.

Ductile cast iron (it is also called spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron) was invented by H. Morrogh in England in 1947 and by A. P. Gagnebin et al. in America in 1948, over a half-century ago. Since then, ductile cast iron has been applied widely as a main industrial material in place of high-grade cast iron with strength of 300 MPa and

Engineering Ductile Iron Castings
2022Abstract Ductile iron has far superior mechanical properties compared to gray iron as well as significantly improved castability and attractive cost savings compared to cast steel. This chapter begins with information on graphite morphology and matrix type. It then discusses the advantages and applications of ductile iron.

Ductility Loss in Ductile Cast Iron with Internal Hydrogen
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2013Hydrogen-induced ductility loss in ductile cast iron (DCI) was studied by conducting a series of tensile tests with three different crosshead speeds. By utilizing the thermal desorption spectroscopy and the hydrogen microprint technique, it was found that most of the solute hydrogen was diffusive and mainly segregated at the graphite, graphite/matrix ...

Abstract This article presents fractographs of overload fractures in a ductile cast iron piston, tensile test bar, differential case, brake caliper, compressor crankshaft, and pivot arm. SEM images show such features as dimpled rupture at the thin metallic matrix ligatures between the graphite nodules, bull's-eye ferrite and pearlite ...

The solidification of ductile cast iron
2011The microsegregation of Mn, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni and Si has been measured in cast ductile iron and in ductile iron which has been quenched when partially solidified. Effective segregation coefficients have been determined for each of the elements, and used to calculate the segregation on the basis of the Scheil equation.

Crack initiation in ductile cast irons
International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2003Two different types of ductile irons have been investigated in this study, one ordinary ferritic/pearlitic grade 500 material (SS 140727), and one ductile iron solution hardened with silicon (SS 14...

A study of ferritic centrifugally cast ductile cast iron
Materials Letters, 1994Abstract A ferritic matrix in ductile cast iron is usually developed by heat treatment, giving the material increased ductility and shock resistance. The effect of microstructure and the independent influence of ferrite grain size on mechanical properties (hardness, impact and tension) have been investigated, controlling microstructure by varying ...

Overview of casting defects in ductile cast iron
2017Objective of this article is to provide an overview of common casting defects occurred during production of ductile cast iron (DCI) and the influence of non-metallic inclusions in the DCI. These defects are referred to slag, sand mould or other foreign substances that are imbedded in the surface, or underneath.
