ATP‐Mediated Bidirectional Communication Between Natural and Artificial Cells for Controlled Bioreactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Establishment of bidirectional communication behavior between natural and artificial cells. The first type of communication from natural dendritic cells to artificial polymeric cells was achieved via ATP release after cell lysis. The released ATP was taken up via gated UV‐controlled permeability increase of the polymeric membrane for performing ...

Biodegradable 3D‐Printable and Coatable Antifouling Composites for Marine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Marine biofouling damages submerged surfaces and raises greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradable antifouling biocomposites were developed by hot‐mixing beeswax, Tween 80, and calcium stearate or stearic acid. Adjusting the component ratio enables processing via hot‐pressing, 3D‐printing, or dip‐coating.

The drivers of cosmic dust temperature evolution

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Observations of the rest-frame far-infrared (far-IR) emission of galaxies suggest a mild increase in dust temperature Tdust with redshift. However, constraining Tdust in high-redshift systems remains challenging due to limited sampling of the ...

Beyond Thin Film Limits—Superhard and Hydrogen‐Free Amorphous Carbon Coatings With Over 100 µm Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
For the first time, an extreme‐thick laser‐arc PVD ta‐C (DLC) coating exceeding 100 µm is demonstrated, opening up new possibilities for ultra‐high load bearing capacity. This superhard amorphous carbon architecture combines >50% sp3 bonding, robust adhesion and self‐supporting performance, shielding substrates from plastic flow under extreme contact ...

Intracrystalline Void‐Mediated Toughening of Brittle Crystals in Quail Eggshells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In quail eggshells, the high density and disordered arrangement of intracrystalline voids inhibit lattice cleavage, suppress long‐range crack propagation, and promote deformation twinning and quasi‐plasticity, serving as an essential toughening motif. We show that these voids remain within a narrow subcritical size range and therefore predominantly do ...

Self‐Powered, Ultra‐Sensitive InGaAs/ITO Nanowire Radial Junction Infrared Photodiode for Low Flux Imaging at Room Temperature

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a self‐powered InGaAs nanowire photodetector achieving single‐photon‐level sensitivity in the shortwave infrared at non‐cryogenic temperatures. The device demonstrates high‐speed imaging capabilities even under extremely low‐flux conditions.

Blue Monsters and Dusty Descendants: Reconciling UV and IR Emission from Galaxies from z ∼ 7, up to z = 14

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Recent JWST observations reveal massive, UV-bright galaxies at z  > 10 with little apparent dust attenuation, whereas Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array detections at z  ≃ 7 show similarly massive systems that are already dust-rich and IR ...

Planet formation at the inner edge of the dead zone

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. The inner edge of the dead zone in protoplanetary disks has been shown to periodically go unstable, leading to accretion outbursts and annular substructure within the dead zone.

Remote Activation of Wnt Signaling and Cell Proliferation by E‐Cadherin Magnetomechanical Stimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A pioneering magnetogenetic toolkit enables non‐invasive, precise spatiotemporal modulation of intracellular Wnt/β‐catenin signaling. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs@E/EC15) target cellular E‐cadherins to generate localized magnetomechanical forces under low‐intensity magnetic fields.
