Ecdysteroids are a class of highly polar steroid hormones that regulate insect development; they are also called molting hormones. The first representative, ecdysone, was isolated in crystalline form more than 30 years ago by Butenandt and Karlson (1954) and its metabolism was studied (Karlson and Koolman 1973; Koolman et al. 1973, 1979).
