Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Scanning Gate Spectroscopy of transport across a Quantum Hall Nano-Island [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We explore transport across an ultra-small Quantum Hall Island (QHI) formed by closed quan- tum Hall edge states and connected to propagating edge channels through tunnel barriers. Scanning gate microscopy and scanning gate spectroscopy are used to first

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Acoustic emission technique for contact detection and cutting state monitoring in ultra-precision turning

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2019
A study to investigate contact detection and recognition of the cutting state by means of the acoustic emission (AE) technique in ultra-precision turning is presented.

Contact resistivity and current flow path at metal/graphene contact

open access: yes, 2010
The contact properties between metal and graphene were examined. The electrical measurement on a multiprobe device with different contact areas revealed that the current flow preferentially entered graphene at the edge of the contact metal.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Development of Edgeless n-on-p Planar Pixel Sensors for future ATLAS Upgrades [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The development of n-on-p "edgeless" planar pixel sensors being fabricated at FBK (Trento, Italy), aimed at the upgrade of the ATLAS Inner Detector for the High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), is reported. A characterizing feature

Boosting bulk photovoltaic effect in transition metal dichalcogenide by edge semimetal contact

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications
Oxide materials with a non-centrosymmetric structure exhibit bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) but with a low cell efficiency. Over the past few years, relatively larger BPVE coefficients have been reported for two-dimensional (2D) layers and stacks with ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Four-point measurements of n- and p-type two-dimensional systems fabricated with cleaved-edge overgrowth

open access: yes, 2005
We demonstrate a contact design that allows four-terminal magnetotransport measurements of cleaved-edge overgrown two-dimensional electron and hole systems.
