The century of education [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper presents a historical database on educational attainment in 74 countries for the period 1870-2010, using perpetual inventory methods before 1960 and then the Cohen and Soto (2007) database. The correlation between the two sets of average years

The impact of frailty syndrome on skeletal muscle histology: preventive effects of exercise

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Frailty syndrome exacerbates skeletal muscle degeneration via increased ECM deposition and myofiber loss. This study, using a murine model, demonstrates that endurance exercise attenuates these histopathological alterations, preserving muscle integrity. Findings support exercise as a viable strategy to counteract frailty‐induced musculoskeletal decline

The relation between teachers’ emphasis on the development of students’ digital information and communication skills and computer self-efficacy: the moderating roles of age and gender

open access: yesLarge-scale Assessments in Education, 2016
Teachers’ integration of information and communication technology (ICT) has been widely studied, given that digital competence is considered to be a crucial outcome of twenty first century education.

Knockout of the mitoribosome rescue factors Ict1 or Mtrfr is viable in zebrafish but not mice: compensatory mechanisms underlying each factor's loss

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

Profiling the effect of low frequency mechanical vibration on the metabolic and oxidative stress responses of A431 carcinoma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
20 Hz mechanical vibration induced A431 cancer cells' apoptosis without such effect on other healthy cell lines of L929 and C2C12. Lowered glucose consumption is observed specifically in A431. The expressions of ROS, HMGB1, and HSP1 levels initially increase and subsequently decrease in the cancer cell line, as opposed to L929 and C2C12, which ...

Estimating Returns to Schooling When Schooling is Misreported [PDF]

open access: yes
We propose a general method of moments technique to identify measurement error in self-reported and transcript-reported schooling using differences in wages, test scores, and other covariates to discern the relative verity of each measure.

Analysis of the regulation of undecaprenyl diphosphate dephosphorylation in Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
BacA, PgpB, and YbjG phosphatases are involved in undecaprenyl phosphate (C55P) synthesis in Escherichia coli. We analyzed the lipid contents and the gene expression in the gene‐disruption strains. Undecaprenyl diphosphate (C55PP) level increased in the bacA, ybjG double‐disruption strain, but C55P levels were similar in all strains.

Co‐overexpression of the caloric restriction‐induced mitochondrial factors PGC‐1α and MIPEP upregulates Phospho1 expression in adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caloric restriction that extends lifespan induces the expression of PGC‐1α and MIPEP in white adipose tissue. In this study, co‐overexpression of Pgc‐1α and Mipep upregulated the gene expression of PHOSPHO1. These findings provide new insights into mitochondria‐related mechanisms underlying the effects of caloric restriction in adipocytes.

Comparison of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Instruments and Skinfold Calipers in the Determination of Percent Body Fat in Division I Tennis Players [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Body composition, specifically percent body fat, is an important measurement performed in both the clinical and educational settings. Very reliable and accurate systems for measuring body composition are available for use, but they are time-consuming and
