1970-luvun loppupuolella valtaan noussut kommunikatiivisen kielenopetuksen ideologia on vähentänyt ääntämisen painoarvoa kieltenopetuksessa merkittävästi. Vaikka tilanne on viime vuosina muuttunut, tutkimukset osoittavat, että ääntämistä opetetaan yhä liian vähän, ja etenkin prosodia jää vähälle huomiolle.
