Functional variation in butterfly egg pore traits: The potential role of climate

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Immobile eggs of terrestrial animals are exposed to variable environmental conditions. Insect egg pores, critical for gas exchange (aeropyles) and fertilisation (micropyles), are ecologically important yet understudied.

Breeding Dispersal of Baltic Dunlins Is Not an Adaptive Response to Unpredictable Nest Flooding

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Flood‐related nest losses of the Baltic dunlin (Calidris alpina schinzii) have drastically increased over the past two decades. Using 20 years of reproductive data from 184 individuals, we found that between‐year and within‐site dispersal tended to increase following nest failure in males.

Comparative metabolomics reveals eggshell translucency formation using LC-MS Analysis

open access: yesPoultry Science
Eggshell translucency is the common problem on eggshell that become more severe with age. They are important because it influence consumer preferences and the economic value of eggs.

The Embryonic Development of the Cotylean Polyclad Phrikoceros jannetae

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Polyclads exhibit distinct developmental modes ranging from direct to indirect development, with several transitional stages also recognised. The existence of an indirect developmental mode in polyclads with a planktonic life history stage in the form of a free‐swimming larva is unique among all free‐living flatworms and makes polyclads a ...

Accumulation of the Drosophila Torso-like protein at the blastoderm plasma membrane suggests that it translocates from the eggshell [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
© 2015. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd. The eggshell serves as a depository for proteins that play an important role in early embryonic development.

The effect of the egg's shape on the stress distribution in the eggshell at internal pressure loading

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2007
The influence of the eggshell shape on the stress distribution under internal pressure is studied. A mathematical description of the hen's eggshell is proposed. The analytical expressions for the membrane solution are presented. Obtained results are used

Egg Chorion Morphology and Egg‐Laying Behaviour of Backswimmer Notonecta viridis Delcourt, 1909 (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha: Notonectidae)

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, the egg‐laying behaviour and chorionic morphology of the eggs of the backswimmer Notonecta viridis Delcourt, 1909 (Heteroptera: Notonectidae) were described in detail using stereo, light and electron microscopy. Female N. viridis lays its eggs individually, horizontally attached to the surface. Eggs are elliptical, approximately
