An Automatic System for Eggshell Quality Monitoring

2001 Sacramento, CA July 29-August 1,2001, 2001
The objective of this project was to develop an automatic system to monitor eggshell quality. A self-designed inspection unit based on pressure loading and de-loading technique was combined with the image processing system to replace human eyes to monitor eggshell quality automatically.

Mycotoxins and eggshell quality: cracking the problem

World Mycotoxin Journal, 2008
Good eggshell quality is essential for preservation of egg contents and embryonic life. Eggs with poor shell quality are rejected both as table eggs and as hatching eggs, leading to heavy economic losses. Dietary mycotoxins in laying hens can predispose them to or precipitate eggshell defects.

Constant photoperiods and eggshell quality in broiler breeder pullets

British Poultry Science, 2005
Broiler breeder pullets were exposed to constant 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- or 16-h photoperiods from 3 d of age. Egg weight, eggshell weight and shell thickness index were determined at 52 weeks of age. Egg weight increased by 0.31 g, shell weight decreased by 30 mg and shell thickness index decreased by 0.57 mg/cm2 for each one-hour increase in ...

Effects of natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) on eggshell quality

Proceedings of the British Society of Animal Science, 2005
Using inorganic additives is one suggested approach for improvement of performance or for preventing some disorders and poisoning of farm animals. One of those which use in animal diets is zeolite. There are more than 40 types of natural zeolites, of which one of the commonest is Clinoptilolite.

Effects of DDT on eggshell quality and calcium adenosine triphosphatase

Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, 1977
Adult mallard ducks were fed a diet containing 50 ppm DDT for 6 months. Eggs laid during this period were collected and eggshell weight, thickness, and calcium were determined. Chronic ingestion of DDT resulted in production of eggshells that were significantly thinner and lighter than those of controls.

Influence of dietary osteolathyrogenson the eggshell quality of laying hens

British Poultry Science, 1998
1. Laying hens were fed osteolathyrogens, either semicarbazide hydrochloride at 0.3 or 0.4 g/kg or beta-aminopropionitrile fumarate at 0.5 or 0.6 g/kg diet to examine their effects on eggshell quality. 2. Shell quality characteristics considered for evaluation were shell surface area, shell thickness, shell weight, percentage shell, shape index and the

Dietary addition of zinc-methionine influenced eggshell quality by affecting calcium deposition in eggshell formation of laying hens

British Journal of Nutrition, 2019
Abstract The present study explored the mechanism of Zn-methionine (Zn-Met) influencing eggshell quality of laying hens and investigated whether the mechanism was related to Ca deposition. Hyline grey layers (n 384, 38 weeks old) were divided into four groups: 0 mg Zn/kg, 40, 80 mg Zn/kg as Zn-Met, and 80 mg Zn/kg as zinc sulphate (ZnSO4).

Chitosan coating minimises eggshell breakage and improves egg quality

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 2007
AbstractThe interior quality of eggs, shell impact strength, and consumer perception of eggs coated with chitosan containing an organic acid (acetic, lactic and propionic) were evaluated. Uncoated eggs had the highest albumen pH and lowest albumen viscosity.

Eggshell quality in extended laying cycle

To improve sustainability of egg production, current practices in the table egg industry aim at lengthening the egg laying cycle of commercial hens from 70-80 to about 100 weeks of age. In such a context, the control of eggshell quality is the limiting factor of extension of the laying cycle rather than the egg production persistency itself. The aim of
