Sensitivity (gradient) of a structural eigenfrequency with respect to a change in density (thickness) of a sub-domain is derived in a simple explicit form. The sub-domain is often an element of a finite element (FE) model, but may be a broader sub-domain, say with a group of elements. This simple result has many applications.

Shape optimization for the eigenfrequency of the plate
Abstract In this paper, we consider an eigenvalue problem for the biharmonic operator that describes the transverse vibrations of the plate. Under the imposed boundary conditions, the eigenvalues of this operator are indeed eigenfrequencies of the clamped plate.

Eigenfrequency constrained topology optimization of finite strain hyperelastic structures
This paper incorporates hyperelastic materials, nonlinear kinematics, and preloads in eigenfrequency constrained density–based topology optimization. The formulation allows for initial finite deformations and subsequent small harmonic oscillations.

Multi-material topology optimization of laminated composite beams with eigenfrequency constraints [PDF]
This paper describes a methodology for simultaneous topology and material optimization in optimal design of laminated composite beams with eigenfrequency constraints. The structural response is analyzed using beam finite elements.
