Optimizing germination and cultivation of edible halophytes using effluents from an IMTA system
Abstract BACKGROUND Halophytes offer nature‐based solutions to food insecurity and soil degradation, while their integration into integrated multi‐trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems promotes circular economy practices. This study aimed to optimize the germination and cultivation of edible halophytic species, namely Limbarda crithmoides, Suaeda vera and

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Ellagic Acid on Acute Lung Injury Induced by Acid in Mice
Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by alveolar edema and uncontrolled neutrophil migration to the lung, and no specific therapy is still available. Ellagic acid, a compound present in several fruits and medicinal plants, has shown anti-inflammatory

Abstract BACKGROUND Grape pomace, a by‐product generated during winemaking, still retains bioactive compounds with potential applications in the food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors. This work investigated ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) coupled with a recirculation system as a strategy to improve their recovery.

Ellagic acid: Characterization as substrate of polyphenol oxidase [PDF]
AbstractEllagic acid has been described as an inhibitor of tyrosinase or polyphenol oxidase and, therefore, of melanogenesis. In this work, we demonstrate that ellagic acid is not an inhibitor, but a substrate of mushroom polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme which oxidizes ellagic acid, generating its o‐quinone.

ABSTRACT Vaccarin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside with cardioprotective properties; however, its involvement in myocardial ischemia–reperfusion (MI/R) injury remains poorly defined. We herein investigated whether vaccarin protects cardiomyocytes from MI/R‐induced dysfunction in vivo and in vitro and examined the associated molecular ...

Ellagic acid prolongs the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster [PDF]
Wild-type Canton-S flies of Drosophila melanogaster were treated with ellagic acid at 100 μM and 200 μM concentrations. Longevity assay showed male flies fed with 200 μM ellagic acid displayed longer mean lifespan and maximum lifespan than control flies. Female flies fed with 200 μM ellagic acid laid less number of eggs than control.
