2006 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2006
This paper presents the model of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator with the simulation package EMTP RV. The model uses a neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converter (VSC) to generate a high quality waveform. The model operation is verified with two types of controllers: Direct and Indirect to validate their mode of operation.

Power Factor Correction Using EMTP-RV for Engineering Education
2019 54th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2019Power quality is one of the major requirements in power system operation and design. A power factor that is close to one is a good indicator for the overall power quality, especially for an electrical power system with high uptake of commercial loads with a large amount of inductance.

Modeling of a Chain Link Statcom in EMTP-RV
2006 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2006This paper describes an alternative circuit arrangement to form a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), by connecting a number of gate turn off (GTO) thyristor converter 'chain links' in series per phase on the AC side of the system. Each GTO converter forms one 'link' of a 1-phase bridge voltage-sourced converter (VSC) and is referred to as a ...

Indirect effects of lightning on wind turbines using EMTP-RV
2011 International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives, 2011This paper is concerned with the protection of wind turbines against the indirect effects of lightning. Lightning damages involving wind turbines have come to be regarded with increasing concern. The wind power generation is rapidly growing in Portugal, but still there are few studies regarding the lightning protection of wind turbines using models of ...

Simulation of electromagnetic transients with EMTP-RV
2015This chapter presented a summary on numerical methods used in EMTP (EMTPRV version) for the computation of electromagnetic transients. EMTP offers several options and modules for the simulation and analysis of complex power systems. EMTP offers a unified environment that can be applied to study power systems from steady-state conditions, to ...

Modeling of Inverter-Based Resources Using Equivalent Current Sources in EMTP-RV
2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2020This paper presents a time-domain, equivalent current source model (CSM) for inverter-based resources in EMTPRV for evaluating their harmonic impacts, behavior, and interactions with the grid. Whereas detailed inverter models can be accurate if the inverter design and parameters are precisely known, their simulations are time-consuming.

EMTP-RV Analysis of Lightning Surges on Wind Turbines
RE&PQJThis paper is concerned with lightning surge propagation on wind turbines. As wind power generation undergoes rapid growth, lightning incidents involving wind turbines have come to be regarded as a serious problem. Nevertheless, no known studies exist yet in Portugal regarding lightning protection of wind turbines. Hence, we present a case study,

Modeling of Voltage Source Converter based HVDC system in EMTP-RV
2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference, 2010This paper presents a detailed model of a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) operated HVDC transmission system, simulated with EMTP-RV package, in order to investigate its operational performance. The VSC control strategy is explained using vector control. The effect of de-coupling between the control parameters is investigated by applying disturbances in ...

Estimation of current distribution in the electric railway system in the EMTP-RV
Electric Power Systems Research, 2018Current distribution in the electric traction system is an important factor regarding the electromagnetic influences on the surrounding metallic structures. The current value directly determines the magnetic field and consequently coupling of the systems. A single rail traction system can be equipped with return conductor.

EMTP-RV Model of Hydraulic Digital Governor
International review on modelling and simulations, 2011This paper presents EMTP-RV model of hydraulic digital governor. Based on block scheme of a digital turbine control system, a novel EMTP-RV model of hydraulic digital governor for stability studies has been developed. Developing of hydraulic digital governor is an important step in achieving a fully integrated system for stability studies.
