An Advanced Interface Between the LIOV Code and the EMTP-RV

open access: yes, 2008
Accurate evaluation of the response of overhead distribution lines to lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) represents an important aspect in insulation coordination of distribution networks. The improvement of the accuracy of such an analysis calls for the extension of the field-to-transmission line coupling models from single straight lines to multi-

A link between EMTP-RV and FLUX3D for transformer energization studies

Electric Power Systems Research, 2009
This paper presents a programmed link between the electromagnetic transients program EMTP-RV and the finite element field solver FLUX3D. The model created in FLUX3D is driven from simulation designs in EMTP-RV. The test cases presented in this paper demonstrate that the coupling method is numerically robust and with sufficient accuracy.

Modeling of SSSC with EMTP RV

2006 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2006
This paper presents the model of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator with the simulation package EMTP RV. The model uses a neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converter (VSC) to generate a high quality waveform. The model operation is verified with two types of controllers: Direct and Indirect to validate their mode of operation.

Modeling of a Chain Link Statcom in EMTP-RV

2006 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2006
This paper describes an alternative circuit arrangement to form a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), by connecting a number of gate turn off (GTO) thyristor converter 'chain links' in series per phase on the AC side of the system. Each GTO converter forms one 'link' of a 1-phase bridge voltage-sourced converter (VSC) and is referred to as a ...

Estimation of current distribution in the electric railway system in the EMTP-RV

Electric Power Systems Research, 2018
Current distribution in the electric traction system is an important factor regarding the electromagnetic influences on the surrounding metallic structures. The current value directly determines the magnetic field and consequently coupling of the systems. A single rail traction system can be equipped with return conductor.

Indirect effects of lightning on wind turbines using EMTP-RV

2011 International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives, 2011
This paper is concerned with the protection of wind turbines against the indirect effects of lightning. Lightning damages involving wind turbines have come to be regarded with increasing concern. The wind power generation is rapidly growing in Portugal, but still there are few studies regarding the lightning protection of wind turbines using models of ...

Simulation of electromagnetic transients with EMTP-RV

2015
This chapter presented a summary on numerical methods used in EMTP (EMTPRV version) for the computation of electromagnetic transients. EMTP offers several options and modules for the simulation and analysis of complex power systems. EMTP offers a unified environment that can be applied to study power systems from steady-state conditions, to ...

Power Factor Correction Using EMTP-RV for Engineering Education

2019 54th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2019
Power quality is one of the major requirements in power system operation and design. A power factor that is close to one is a good indicator for the overall power quality, especially for an electrical power system with high uptake of commercial loads with a large amount of inductance.

Modeling, control and simulation of a chain link STATCOM in EMTP-RV

Electric Power Systems Research, 2009
Abstract This paper describes an alternative STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM), by connecting a number of gate turn off (GTO) thyristor converters in series on the ac side of the system. Each GTO converter forms one ‘link’ of a 1-phase, full-bridge voltage–source-converter (VSC) and is referred to as a ‘Chain Link Converter’ (CLC). Each GTO of

Research on lightning overvoltage in Ecuador 230kV GIS substation based on EMTP-RV

2021 IEEE 4th International Electrical and Energy Conference (CIEEC), 2021
The simulation model of a new 230 kV GIS substation in Ecuador was established by EMTP-RV. The lightning overvoltage levels of the main equipment in the substation under different modes of thunder wave invasion, different tower and substation operation are calculated, and the insulation coordination of each equipment is checked.
