This paper presents the model of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator with the simulation package EMTP RV. The model uses a neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converter (VSC) to generate a high quality waveform. The model operation is verified with two types of controllers: Direct and Indirect to validate their mode of operation.

A static compensator model for the EMTP
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 1992A static voltampere-reactive (VAr) compensator (SVC) model based on nodal analysis, is presented. The model is integrated in the electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) with minimal interface error and by taking into account initialization. The model is basically a generic compensator using thyristor controlled reactors.

Simultaneous Solution of Control System Equations in EMTP
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2006The existing approach for solving control systems in the Electromagnetics Transients Program is to insert one-time-step delays for breaking feedback loops when one or more nonlinear functions is encountered. Although this approach may remain acceptable for several well-behaved cases, it provides a nonsimultaneous solution for a nonlinear system.

Modeling of a Chain Link Statcom in EMTP-RV
2006 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2006This paper describes an alternative circuit arrangement to form a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), by connecting a number of gate turn off (GTO) thyristor converter 'chain links' in series per phase on the AC side of the system. Each GTO converter forms one 'link' of a 1-phase bridge voltage-sourced converter (VSC) and is referred to as a ...

Implementation of a new harmonic initialization method in the EMTP
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1995Nonlinear branches, such as saturable reactors, can generate harmonics and consequently increase the EMTP time-domain simulation time before the actual distorted steady-state is reached. This is an important initialization problem for transient analysis studies performed in steady-state operating conditions.

A generalized harmonic balance method for EMTP initialization
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1995The harmonic balance method is extended to the steady-state analysis of power system models that include complex nonlinearities and variable topology power electronics equipment as may be user-assembled from basic EMTP-TACS components. In applying the harmonic balance method, these devices are considered as black boxes and isolated from the linear part

Running EMTP on PCs (power systems)
IEEE Computer Applications in Power, 1993The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is a computer program for the simulation of electric power system transient phenomena. The program provides a large set of device models permitting accurate modeling of power system components over a wide frequency range.

Advanced semiconductor modeling using the EMTP
Proceedings of 1994 IEEE Workshop on Computers in Power Electronics, 2002Advanced models of two semiconductor devices, the diode and IGBT, have been developed using a general purpose program, the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). These models are based on semiconductor physics and reproduce with high accuracy their behaviour during switching phenomena.

EMTP Simulation of a Chain-Link STATCOM
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2008A recent addition to the STATCOM family has been obtained by connecting a number of gate turn off (GTO) thyristor converters in series on the ac side of the system. Each GTO converter forms one ldquolinkrdquo of a one-phase, full-bridge voltage-source converter (VSC) and is referred to as a ldquochain link converterrdquo (CLC).
