Endogenous retroviruses and human disease
Expert Review of Clinical Immunology, 2006Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) constitute up to 8% of the human genome. In general they are highly defective, but complete proviruses have also been described. Over time some transposable elements became inactive, while others retain mobility within the genome. Variably inserting in cellular genes, and differentially within the various allotypes

Endogenous Retroviruses in the Genomics Era
Annual Review of Virology, 2015Endogenous retroviruses comprise millions of discrete genetic loci distributed within the genomes of extant vertebrates. These sequences, which are clearly related to exogenous retroviruses, represent retroviral infections of the deep past, and their abundance suggests that retroviruses were a near-constant presence throughout the evolutionary history ...

Xenotransplantation and pig endogenous retroviruses
Reviews in Medical Virology, 2003AbstractXenotransplantation, in particular transplantation of pig cells, tissues and organs into human patients, may alleviate the current shortage of suitable allografts available for human transplantation. This overview addresses the physiological, immunological and virological factors considered with regard to xenotransplantation.

Endogenous Retroviruses of Mice and Chickens
1982Endogenous retroviruses are retroviruses which are transmitted as proviruses in the germ line. Endogenous retroviruses are found in many animal species (Aaronson and Stephenson 1976). Some genetically transmitted proviruses lead to production of infectious virus, whereas others code for defective viruses or are unexpressed.
