Contact System Activation on Endothelial Cells

Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2014
When the contact system assembles and activates on negatively charged surface materials, plasma coagulation rapidly follows. This mechanism is redundant for hemostasis but mediates pathological thrombus formation, as was reported in a multitude of in vivo studies.

Endothelial Activation and Inflammation

1989
Recent studies have shown that vascular endothelial cells respond to various stimuli, particularly to cytokines, by undergoing specific alterations in their normal constitutive properties, and by acquiring new capacities that may perform important functions in both acute arid chronic inflammation.

Shear stress and endothelial cell activation

Critical Care Medicine, 2002
We have shown previously that ischemia in an isolated rat lung that is normally oxygenated by continued ventilation results in lipid and protein oxidation, indicating the generation of reactive oxygen species. By using a variety of biochemical and imaging techniques, we determined that the initial response, which occurs within the first second of ...

Antiheparin activity in human endothelial cells

Thrombosis Research, 1986
Human endothelial cells possess antiheparin activity that neutralizes the anticoagulant action of heparin as measured by different tests of the clotting system. The antiheparin activity appears to be associated with an acid-soluble basic protein present in the particulate fraction of the endothelial cell cytoplasm.

[Pre-eclampsia--endothelial damage of endothelial activation?].

Zentralblatt fur Gynakologie, 2000
There is considerable evidence that endothelial damage, followed by the release of vasoactive substances contributes to the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Because of controversial experiences in literature we wanted to evaluate the potential cytotoxic effect of preeclamptic sera on cultured endothelial cells.

The role of MAP kinases in endothelial activation

Vascular Pharmacology, 2002
Activation of endothelial cells by proinflammatory stimuli results in increased migration of leukocytes across the endothelium, which contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis. Thus, control of the inflammatory status of endothelial cells, which is achieved by a balance of pro- and antiinflammatory signals, is crucial to limiting the disease ...

The metabolic activity of pulmonary endothelial cells

Pneumonologie Pneumonology, 1976

Endothelial cells are active

2016
The vascular endothelium was long regarded as simply a diffusion barrier, but now it is recognized that endothelium is a metabolically active mediator of interactions between blood and underlying smooth muscle. Metabolic functions of endothelial cells include the enzymatic destruction of serotonin, norepinephrine, the conversion of angiotensin I to ...
