Comparing German and US Energy Transitions: Centralized vs. Decentralized Government Approaches [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The German Energiewende (“energy transition”) is often credited with being the most ambitious renewable energy transition in the world. Germany’s rapid transition is mainly led by their Renewable Energy Act of 2000, which has been amended several times ...

Superconductor-Insulator transition and energy localization

open access: yes, 2010
We develop an analytical theory for generic disorder-driven quantum phase transitions. We apply this formalism to the superconductor-insulator transition and we briefly discuss the applications to the order-disorder transition in quantum magnets.

INTEGRAL/RossiXTE high-energy observation of a state transition of GX 339-4 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
On 2004 August 15, we observed a fast (shorter than 10 hours) state transition in the bright black-hole transient GX 339-4 simultaneously with RossiXTE and INTEGRAL. This transition was evident both in timing and spectral properties.

Revealing the structure of land plant photosystem II: the journey from negative‐stain EM to cryo‐EM

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Advances in cryo‐EM have revealed the detailed structure of Photosystem II, a key protein complex driving photosynthesis. This review traces the journey from early low‐resolution images to high‐resolution models, highlighting how these discoveries deepen our understanding of light harvesting and energy conversion in plants.

Energy transition

open access: yes
This article presents the experience conducted by researchers at the University of Lille on the technical, scientific and societal issues of the energy transition. Thanks to an academic chair on Energy Transition and an «open laboratory», cross-disciplinary views from the academic world, industry, civil society, local authorities and associations were ...

From Retrofitting to Renewables: Navigating Energy Transition Pathways for European Residential Space Heating

open access: yesEnergies
Transformative actions are crucial across all sectors emitting greenhouse gases. Nonetheless, energy transition research to date displays a notable imbalance, with a larger emphasis on the supply side than on the demand side.

String Method for the Study of Rare Events

open access: yes, 2002
We present a new and efficient method for computing the transition pathways, free energy barriers, and transition rates in complex systems with relatively smooth energy landscapes. The method proceeds by evolving strings, i.e.

Erratum: (2x1)-(1x1) Phase Transition on Ge(001): Dimer Breakup and Surface Roughening [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 116102 (2003)] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Using low energy electron microscopy, we have investigated the (2×1)-(1×1) phase transition occurring above 925 K on Ge(001). Dimer breakup has been identified as the physical origin of this transition.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Differences between economical, ecological and societal optimal designs of solar parks due to feed-in restrictions

open access: yesEPJ Photovoltaics
With increasing market share of distributed, renewable electricity generation, challenges like net congestion, become increasingly relevant. Solar parks in northwest Europe are generating electrical energy homogeneously over the full capacity range.
