Entropies and cross-entropies of exponential families

2010 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, 2010
Statistical modeling of images plays a crucial role in modern image processing tasks like segmentation, object detection and restoration. Although Gaussian distributions are conveniently handled mathematically, the role of many other types of distributions has been revealed and emphasized by natural image statistics.

SOME RESULTS ON ENTROPY AND SEQUENCE ENTROPY

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 1999
In this paper we study some formulas involving metric and topological entropy and sequence entropy. We summarize some classical formulas satisfied by metric and topological entropy and ask the question whether the same or similar results hold for sequence entropy.

Entropy and entropy of mixing

Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik, 2014
Entropy as a function of temperature at constant volume, S(T), can be determined by integrating the molar specific entropy capacity CV/T (CV: molar specific heat capacity at constant volume). As a second approach, S(T) at constant volume can be determined by differentiating the free energy with respect to the temperature, T. Recently, it has been shown

When is an Entropy an Entropy?

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006
I consider the conceptual arguments leading to the validity of the conventional physical approach to thermodynamics, as we know it. In spite of the familiarity we have with this approach, its internal logical structure deserves to be extracted. No new features are found, but some universal properties emerge. These are then applied to the unconventional

Entropy Power Inequality for the Rényi Entropy

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2015
The classical entropy power inequality is extended to the Renyi entropy. We also discuss the question of the existence of the entropy for sums of independent random variables.

Entropy and the Entropy Principle

2019
Clausius generalized the mathematical expression of Carnot’s principle obtained by Kelvin, and in 1865, introduced the concept of entropy and formulated the entropy principle. With the concept of entropy and the idea of the entropy principle, a definition of heat can be given, as well as mathematical formalism on equilibrium thermodynamics was ...

Entropy and Entropy Production

1973
The limitations of a thermodynamic theory of a continuum by the atomic structure of matter are briefly discussed. They imply that any thermodynamic theory is of an approximate nature. Main emphasis is laid on the concept of a nonequilibrium entropy. It is shown that to an isothermal electrical network one can apply thermodynamic reasoning.

A generalization of entropy equation: homogeneous entropies

Kybernetika, 1985
The general continuous, positively homogeneous (of degree \(\alpha\), \(\alpha >0)\) and symmetric solutions of the equation \[ H(x,y,z)- H(x+y,0,z) =G(x,y) \qquad (x\geq 0, y\geq 0, z\geq 0, xy+yz+zx>0) \] are determined by means of distributions (in the sense of Schwartz). The corresponding homogeneous entropies are defined and characterized.
