A histidine‐rich extension of the mitochondrial F0 subunit ATP6 from the ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus increases ATP synthase activity in bacteria

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The glacier ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus survives year‐round at 0 °C. Its ATP6 subunit, which forms a regulatory component of the proton pore in mitochondrial ATP synthase, has a carboxy‐terminal extension not found in any other organism examined to date. Here, we show that fusion of this extension to the homologous AtpB protein in E. coli results

Building a children's health and environment research agenda in Alberta, Canada: A multi-stakeholder engagement process

open access: yesGateways, 2019
As new environmental exposures are continuously identified, environmental influences on health are of growing concern. Knowledge regarding the impacts of environmental exposures is constantly evolving and is often incomplete. In this paper, we describe a

Visualization Tool for Environmental Sensing and Public Health Data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
To assist residents affected by oil and gas development, public health professionals in a non-profit organization have collected community data, including symptoms, air quality, and personal stories. However, the organization was unable to aggregate and visualize these data computationally.

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Estimation and false discovery control for the analysis of environmental mixtures [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
The analysis of environmental mixtures is of growing importance in environmental epidemiology, and one of the key goals in such analyses is to identify exposures and their interactions that are associated with adverse health outcomes. Typical approaches utilize flexible regression models combined with variable selection to identify important exposures ...

Promoting environmental health [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1996
The British government's white paper, Health of the Nation, received a cautious welcome on its publication in 1992.1 Its critics believed that its approach to health was limited, that it omitted many important issues such as the effects of environment and poverty, and that it implied ditching the World Health Organisation's comprehensive Health For All

The apo LETM1 F‐EF‐hand adopts a closed conformation that underlies a multi‐modal sensory role in mitochondria

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the first solution structure of the Ca2+‐depleted LETM1 F‐EF‐hand through a D676A/N678A Ca2+ binding‐deficient mutant, revealing a closed hydrophobic cleft caused by a unique F1‐helix pivot. The apo LETM1 F‐EF‐hand exhibits regiospecific hot and cold unfolding, sensitivity to physiological pH changes and potential for promiscuous heterotypic
