Examination of the Staple and Effective Land Equivalent Ratios
SUMMARYTwo extensions to the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) concept, the Effective LER and the Staple LER, are evaluated for an intercrop of two species. The use of different standardizing sole-crop yields in the Effective LER equation is emphasized for the formation of different comparisons between intercrop and sole-crop yields.

The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Another Look at Empirical Equivalence and Underdetermination of Theory Choice [PDF]
In 1991 Larry Laudan and Jarret Leplin proposed a solution for the problem of predictive equivalence and empirical underdetermination. In this paper we claim that, even though Laudan and Leplin’s reasoning is essentially correct, their solution of the ...

Impact of intake conditions on characteristics of combustion of the HCCI engine using PRF80
Recently, research on internal combustion engines has focused on mitigating and reducing pollution emissions and fuel consumption. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a promising solution.

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Effects of Biomass Feedstocks and Gasification Conditions on the Physiochemical Properties of Char
Char is a low-value byproduct of biomass gasification and pyrolysis with many potential applications, such as soil amendment and the synthesis of activated carbon and carbon-based catalysts.

Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

RANS Study on the Impact of Equivalence Ratio on Natural Gas/Diesel-Fueled Combustion in RCCI Engine [PDF]
The primary reason in favor of Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) is that combustion occurs at low temperature, leading to low thermal NOx. Using the RCCI approach is highly demanded due to stringent emission laws.
