Learning from errors and resilience

Current Opinion in Anaesthesiology, 2023
Purpose of review Learning from errors has been the main objective of patient safety initiatives for the last decades. The different tools have played a role in the evolution of the safety culture to a nonpunitive system-centered one.

Circuits resilient to short-circuit errors

Proceedings of the 54th Annual ACM SIGACT Symposium on Theory of Computing, 2022
Given a Boolean circuit C, we wish to convert it to a circuit C′ that computes the same function as C even if some of its gates suffer from adversarial short circuit errors, i.e., their output is replaced by the value of one of their inputs. Can we design such a resilient circuit C′ whose size is roughly comparable to that of C?

Error resilient OBDDs

2013 IEEE 16th International Symposium on Design and Diagnostics of Electronic Circuits & Systems (DDECS), 2013
Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (OBDDs) are a widely used data structure for Boolean function manipulation. In particular, OBDDs are commonly used in CAD for the synthesis and verification of integrated circuits. The purpose of this paper is to design an error resilient version of this data structure, i.e., self-repairing OBDDs.We describe some ...

Error Resilient Decoding of JPEG2000

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2007
In this letter, we investigate the error resilience properties of JPEG2000. We identify the dependencies among coding passes of a codeblock codestream, and determine the sections of the codestream that can be salvaged in the presence of errors. In our analysis, we consider the effects of mode variations provided by the standard.

Error-Resilient Optimal Data Compression

SIAM Journal on Computing, 1997
Summary: The problem of communication and computation in the presence of errors is difficult, and general solutions can be time consuming and inflexible (particularly when implemented with a prescribed error detection/correction). A reasonable approach is to investigate reliable communication in carefully selected areas of fundamental interest where ...

Error resilience support in H.263+

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 1998
Version 2 of ITU Recommendation H.263, better known as H.263+, includes a number of new mechanisms to improve coding efficiency and support various types of networks more efficiently. This paper provides an overview of the error resilience optional modes of H.263+ and describes the use of such modes in various multimedia network scenarios.

Selective Error Detection for Error-Resilient JPEG2000 Coding

2006 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speed and Signal Processing Proceedings, 2006
This paper presents a selective error detection (SED) scheme that is based on a similarity check function designed for the JPEG2000 compression algorithm. The presented scheme takes advantage of the error-resilience properties of JPEG-2000 to significantly reduce the number of corrupted data packets that need to be retransmitted in a typical ARQ scheme.

Standard errors resilient to error variance misspecification

Biometrika, 1988
For parameter estimators in linear models, variance estimates are proposed which are positive-semidefinite quadratic forms like the conventional ones but are less dependent on assumptions about error variance. Examples are given of their use in spatial analyses of field trials and analyses of series of trials.

Error Resilience and Error Concealment for Embedded Wavelet Coders

2005 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2005
This paper presents an error-resilient coding technique combined with error concealment for embedded wavelet coders. The coded images are partitioned into packets and protected by multiple descriptions. Each packet contains an independent spatial-orientation tree and duplicated copies of other root wavelet coefficients.

Embedded video compression with error resilience and error concealment

SPIE Proceedings, 2002
This paper presents an embedded video compression with error resilience and error concealment using three dimensional SPIHT (3-D SPIHT) algorithm. We use a new method for partitioning the wavelet coefficients into spatio-temporal (s-t) blocks to get higher error resilience and to support error concealment.
