Role of antibiotic production by Erwinia herbicola Eh252 in biological control of Erwinia amylovora [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1992
Erwinia herbicola Eh252 is a nonpathogenic epiphytic bacterium that reduces fire blight incidence when sprayed onto apple blossoms before inoculation with Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight. Eh252 was found to produce on minimal medium an antibiotic that inhibited the growth of E. amylovora.

Bacteriophages in the Rhizosphere: Roles in Nutrient Cycling, Bacterial Community Structure, and Animal‐Mediated Dispersal

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 3, June 2026.
This review discusses bacteriophages' roles in soil ecosystems, highlighting their impact on nutrient cycling, plant health, and soil remediation, as well as animal‐mediated phage dispersal mechanisms. Overall, while bacteriophages have potential biotechnological applications, their negative effects on microbial functions and nutrient cycling highlight

Expression of lysozymes from Erwinia amylovora phages and Erwinia genomes and inhibition by a bacterial protein

open access: yes, 2012
Genes coding for lysozyme-inhibiting proteins (Ivy) were cloned from the chromosomes of the plant pathogens Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae. The product interfered not only with activity of hen egg white lysozyme, but also with an enzyme from E.

Extracellular Proteases in Erwinia chrysanthemi

open access: yesMicrobiology, 1986
Extracellular proteolytic enzyme activity has been detected in cultures of Erwinia chrysanthemi. This activity, which appears when the cells are grown in the presence of peptides, is rather unstable. A hyperproteolytic mutant was isolated which produces two proteases of apparent polypeptide molecular mass of 50 and 55 kDa, respectively.

Fog, Symbiosis, and Survival: The Ecological Architecture of the Grit Crust From the Atacama Desert Represents a Lichen Holobiome Rather Than a Soil Microbiome

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2026.
Multi‐marker metabarcoding (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2) of the fog‐dependent grit crust in the Atacama Desert reveals a community structured by lichen symbioses rather than typical soil‐derived microbial assemblages. The green algal photobiont Trebouxia dominates the eukaryotic community, accompanied by lichenized Caliciales and lichen‐associated ...

Characterisation and In Planta Activity of Bacteriophages That Infect the Key Bacterial Species Associated With Acute Oak Decline

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
Phages that infect the oak pathogens Brenneria goodwinii and Gibbsiella quercinecans were isolated. The phages were able to effectively reduce bacterial populations of their respective hosts in vitro. However, when applied in planta, the phages did not reduce host populations and instead phages and bacteria co‐existed over time.

Functional Characterisation of the Quorum‐Sensing Regulator ExpREcz in Modulation of Dickeya oryzae Motility and Virulence

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 27, Issue 6, June 2026.
In the absence of OHHL synthase ExpIEcz, ExpREcz represses self‐expression via EDDR region and regulates Dickeya oryzae virulence traits. OHHL synthesised via ExpIEcz abolishes ExpREcz function but promotes OHHL production and D. oryzae virulence.
