New synchronization method for Plasmodium falciparum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Plasmodium falciparum is usually asynchronous during in vitro culture. Although various synchronization methods are available, they are not able to narrow the range of ages of parasites.

Storage of Erythrocytes Induces Suicidal Erythrocyte Death

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2016
Background/Aims: Similar to apoptosis of nucleated cells, red blood cells (RBC) can undergo suicidal cell death - called eryptosis. It is characterized by cell shrinkage and phosphatidylserine translocation. Eryptosis is triggered by an increase of intracellular calcium concentration due to activation of nonselective cation channels.

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

Ecotoxicity and hematological effects of a natural insecticide based on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) extract on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.14131

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2012
Natural insecticides from plant extracts represent an alternative to the highly toxic synthetic products in order to reduce environmental contamination; however some might also be toxic for non-target organisms.

Inhibitor of DNA binding‐1 is a key regulator of cancer cell vasculogenic mimicry

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Elevated expression of transcriptional regulator inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1) promoted cancer cell‐mediated vasculogenic mimicry (VM) through regulation of pro‐angiogenic and pro‐cancerous genes (e.g. VE‐cadherin (CDH5), TIE2, MMP9, DKK1). Higher ID1 expression also increased metastases to the lung and the liver.

Age Sensitivity of NFκB Abundance and Programmed Cell Death in Erythrocytes Induced by NFκB Inhibitors

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2013
Background/Aims: Erythrocytes may enter eryptosis, a suicidal death characterized by cell shrinkage and phosphatidylserine exposure at the erythrocyte outer membrane.

Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

FUSION OF INTACT HUMAN ERYTHROCYTES AND ERYTHROCYTE GHOSTS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Cell Biology, 1974
Sendai virus is able to induce the fusion of human erythrocytes. Bivalent cations or ATP are not essential for polyerythrocyte formation. High fusion indices were obtained when Sendai virus was added to cells incubated in the presence of both EDTA and iodoacetic acid.
