Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Estimating Investment Equations in Imperfect Capital Markets [PDF]

open access: yes
Numerous studies have tried to provide a better understanding of firm-level investment behaviour using econometric models. The model specification of more recent studies has been based on two main approaches. The first, the real options approach, focuses

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Study of socioeconomic differences of long-term PM2.5 exposure and population mortality risk - based on 345 cities from 2000 to 2019 in China

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background Previous studies have thoroughly evaluated the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and mortality, but the effect of socioeconomic status on the association remains controversial.

Sparse Estimation for Hamiltonian Mechanics

open access: yesMathematics
Estimating governing equations from observed time-series data is crucial for understanding dynamical systems. From the perspective of system comprehension, the demand for accurate estimation and interpretable results has been particularly emphasized ...

Estimating gravity equations with endogeneous trade costs [PDF]

open access: yes
A basic assumption of the gravity equation of international trade is that increasing trade costs lower exports. Butintuition and theory imply that a high export volume lowers bilateral trade costs as well, because a fixed cost intensivetrade sector ...

Long‐Term Follow‐Up of Chemotherapy‐Associated Biological Aging in Women With Early Breast Cancer

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Women threated with adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer have sustained long‐term increase in p16INK4a,, a robust marker of cell senescence, suggesting a chemotherapy‐associated age acceleration. p16INK4a as well as other biomarkers may identify patients at greatest risk for senescence‐related diseases of aging.

Predicting Loss of Ambulation in Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy R9

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type R9 (LGMDR9) results from biallelic variants in FKRP. There is limited data to predict loss of ambulation (LOA) among those with LGMDR9. Methods Participants in an ongoing dystroglycanopathy natural history study (NCT00313677) with FKRP variants who had achieved ambulation and were more than 3 ...
