In this study, 38 tuberculosis patients who had 42 pregnancies are presented. All the patients received ethambutol (EMB) in multidrug regimens. The dose of EMB was 15 mg/kg in 24 of the pregnancies, 25 mg/kg in 7, and in 11 25 mg/kg at first and then 15 mg/kg.

Ethambutol (Myambutol - Lederle), a new antituberculosis drug, was developed from a compound discovered during development of rubber additives. It is chemically different from all other antituberculosis drugs, and shows no cross-resistance with any of them.

Abstract principally in the liver, kidney, and lungs, and tissue-to-plasma concentration ratios greater than twofold are found in heart, spleen, and muscle, but not brain (11 ). Ethambutol reportedly “accumulates” in the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and retina of treated rats (16).
