Subcellular localization of the five members of the human steroid 5α-reductase family [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In humans the steroid 5a-reductase (SRD5A) family comprises five integral membrane enzymes that carry out reduction of a double bond in lipidic substrates: D4-3-keto steroids, polyprenol and trans-enoyl CoA.

Pra‐GE‐ATLAS: Empowering Pinus radiata stress and breeding research through a multi‐omics database

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, Volume 67, Issue 8, Page 2028-2043, August 2025.
Gymnosperms represent molecular and ecological diversity hotspots, yet they remain understudied due to limited community resources. To address this gap, the P(inus)ra(diata)‐G(ene)E(xpression)‐ATLAS provides a refined multi‐omics platform for Pinus radiata that advances conifer research and facilitates the evaluation of conserved plant molecular ...

Kinetic control of eukaryotic chromatin structure by recursive topological restraints [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Chromatin structure undergoes many changes during the cell cycle and in response to regulatory events. A basic unit of chromatin organization is the nucleosome core particle.

Isolation and Genetic Identification of Metazoan Cells From Seawater

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
We introduce environmental metazoan cells (emCells) ‐ whole individual cells shed by macro‐organisms into aquatic ecosystems ‐ and present a method to isolate and profile their mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Using fluorescent activated cell sorting and metabarcoding, we enriched for fish emCells from a mesocosm, demonstrating species detection and ...

Contrasting Dynamics and Biotic Association Networks in Estuarine Microbenthic Communities Along an Environmental Disturbance Gradient

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Environmental DNA samples were collected across a time series from six estuaries from the Basque coast experiencing different degrees of disturbance. Prokaryotic communities and their association networks differed depending on the disturbance level, being more stable in less impacted estuaries.

Motifs tree: a new method for predicting post-translational modifications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Motivation: Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are important steps in the maturation of proteins. Several models exist to predict specific PTMs, from manually detected patterns to machine learning methods.

Unveiling Structure of Tropical Estuarine Communities Through eDNA and Implications for Biomonitoring

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
The implementation of eDNA biomonitoring in tropical estuaries allowed us to draw several conclusions pertaining to biodiversity patterns in tropical estuaries subjected to different levels of human disturbance. All taxonomic groups, in both the water column and sediments, were primarily structured by the ecological status of the estuary.

The Larval and Adult Female Gut Microbiomes of Two Burying Beetles (Nicrophorus spp.) With Distinct Parental Care Traits

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 7, July 2025.
The burying beetle Nicrophorus orbicollis consistently provides extensive post‐hatch parental care at a significant cost, while Nicrophorus marginatus provides inconsistent post‐hatch parental care. This study highlights how these differences impact parental and larval microbiomes of both species and the implications for parental‐offspring microbiome ...

Ancient and novel small RNA pathways compensate for the loss of piRNAs in multiple independent nematode lineages.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2015
Small RNA pathways act at the front line of defence against transposable elements across the Eukaryota. In animals, Piwi interacting small RNAs (piRNAs) are a crucial arm of this defence.

Transcriptional response in larvae of the generalist fruit fly Anastrepha obliqua feeding on three different tropical host plants

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 7, Page 708-723, July 2025.
We investigated the molecular basis of host switching by the phytophagous West Indian fruit fly (A. obliqua). Third‐instar larvae showed differential gene expression according to host plants: red mombin, mango, and carambola. The main gene categories differentially expressed were digestion, detoxification, and gene regulators.
