Oceanic changes in the Sargasso Sea and declines in recruitment of the European eel

open access: yes, 2007
Anguillid eel recruitment in the North Atlantic has declined in recent decades, raising concerns that climatic changes in the Sargasso Sea may be influencing oceanic reproduction and larval survival.

Light‐Induced Structural Reorganization of Fe Centers Unlocks High Efficiency of Visible‐Light Photo‐Fenton Water Cleaning Catalyst

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Bimetallic Cu and Fe oxide species supported on porous silica with interparticle mesoporosity act as efficient photo‐Fenton‐like catalysts under visible light. Photogenerated electrons drive the Cu2+/Cu1+ redox cycle. Part of Cu1+ is responsible for the regeneration of the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle at neutral pH. Light irradiation additionally induces structural

First occurrence of the eel parasite Paraquimperia tenerrima in lake Balaton, Hungary

open access: yes, 2006
The parasite fauna of the eel has been studied regularly since the first imported eels were introduced to Lake Balaton in 1963. Over a long period of time no important parasitic infections were recorded. However, the importance of nematode infections has

Exploring correlations between sex steroids and fatty acids and their potential roles in the induced maturation of the male European eel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
[EN] The present study was undertaken to evaluate the correlations between the fatty acids in the liver and testis and the plasma levels of the hormonal steroids used during eel spermatogenesis, in order to clarify the physiological roles fatty acids ...

The Eel Market Extinction Vortex

open access: yesConservation Letters
The market extinction vortex is a self‐fueled process by which a species is more intensively exploited as it becomes rarer, due to human eagerness to pay for the possession or use of scarce items.

Light‐Modulated Exchange Bias in Multiferroic Heterostructures

open access: yesElectron, EarlyView.
In this article, exchange bias and magnetization are modulated with visible light at room temperature in PMN‐PZT/FeGa/IrMn multiferroic heterostructures. Photostrictive effect is the main mechanism leading to the modulation of magnetic anisotropy and interfacial exchange bias coupling between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers.

Quantification of 10B and 11B in Biological Samples in Translational Science and Clinical Applications for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT)

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a targeted radiotherapy that exploits the selective accumulation of the 10B isotope within tumors, followed by irradiation with low‐energy neutrons to induce high linear energy transfer particles with short path lengths, resulting in localized tumor cell destruction while sparing surrounding healthy ...

Potential biomarkers on gametogenesis process and in sperm quality of european EEL (Anguilla anguilla) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Dissertação de mestrado, Aquacultura, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade do Algarve, 2015The over-exploitation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has been damaging natural stocks of wild populations, creating the need of improvement in the

Variations in the gene expression of zona pellucida proteins, zpb and zpc, in female European eel (Anguilla anguilla) during induced sexual maturation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
[EN] Vertebrate eggs are surrounded by an extracellular glycoprotein coat termed zona pellucida (ZP). Integrity of ZP is critical for a correct embryo development.
