A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Subpar reporting of pre‐analytical variables in RNA‐focused blood plasma studies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical variables strongly influence the analysis of extracellular RNA (cell‐free RNA; exRNA) derived from blood plasma. Their reporting is essential to allow interpretation and replication of results. By evaluating 200 exRNA studies, we pinpoint a lack of reporting pre‐analytical variables associated with blood collection, plasma preparation ...

Income Distribution in the European Union Versus in the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We prove that the refined approach -- our extension of the Yakovenko et al. formalism -- is universal in the sense that it describes well both household incomes in the European Union and the individual incomes in the United States for social classes of any income.

Mid Term Evaluation of the Mine Action Programme in Afghanistan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Elements of both projects can be seen as very successful. Overall, the UNMAS project was more successful, whereas UNDP\u27s ANBP was seen as increasingly under-performing, and became less relevant, during this funding period.

Integrative systems‐level analysis reveals a contextual crosstalk between hypoxia and global metabolism in human breast tumors

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast tumor samples scored for metabolic deregulation (M1 to M3) were given a hypoxia score (HS). The highest HS occurred in patients with strongest metabolic deregulation (M3), supporting tumor aggressiveness. HS correlated with the highest number of metabolic pathways in M1. This suggests hypoxia to be an early event in metabolic deregulation.

Business cycle synchronization within the European Union: A wavelet cohesion approach [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
In this paper, we map the process of business cycle synchronization across the European Union. We study this synchronization by applying wavelet techniques, particularly the cohesion measure with time-varying weights. This novel approach allows us to study the dynamic relationship among selected countries from a different perspective than the usual ...
