Financial and welfare implications of immediately euthanizing compromised nursery pigs

open access: yesJournal of Swine Health and Production, 2006
Objective: To provide economic and welfare information necessary to determine if a compromised pig should be euthanized or provided continued care. Methods: We assigned batches of pigs to protocols that required many, some, or few compromised pigs to be euthanized upon entering the nursery (aggressive, moderate, or conservative euthanasia protocols ...

Viral antigen expression in tissues of selected chickens that were euthanized at humane endpoint.

open access: yes
(A) Degree of viral antigen expression in tissues of a chicken mono-inoculated with ~104 EID50 H7N7-HPHAtag and euthanized at humane endpoint at 4 dpi (A) and a chicken co-inoculated with H7N7-LPFLAGtag/H7N7-HPHAtag and euthanized at humane endpoint at 3

A Magneto‐Mechanically Activated Nerve Guidance Conduit Promotes Peripheral Nerve Regeneration via TIMP1‐Mediated Membrane Tension Transfer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a magneto‐mechanical strategy that incorporates FP@MSCs into an aligned PCL/GelMA nerve guidance conduit. Magnetic stimulation increases membrane tension in FP@MSCs, triggering cytoskeletal remodeling, Schwann cell‐like differentiation, and TIMP1 secretion. TIMP1 activates ITGB1/CD63–FAK signaling in NE‐4C cells, increasing membrane

Nannizziopsis arthrosporioides infection mimicking ophidiomycosis in ball pythons (Python regius)

open access: yesMedical Mycology Case Reports
A wild caught snake presented with progressive dermatopathy and was euthanized due to a clinical suspicion for ophiomycosis. Over the next 7 days, six additional ball pythons, maintained in the same room but in separate cages from the index case ...

Microfluidic Nano‐Assembly of Red‐Blood‐Cell (RBC) Lipids and Components for Engineering Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered red blood cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (eRBCEVs) are synthesized via controlled microfluidic assembly from native RBC lipids, enabling tunable encapsulation of proteins, nucleic acids, nanoparticles, and viral vectors. The platform demonstrates reproducible nanoscale architecture, preserved membrane composition, and functional cargo ...

Evaluation of nociception and edema in experimental sciatic nerve compression model in Wistar rats treated with cryotherapy

open access: yesRevista Dor
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Considering the scarcity of studies addressing cryotherapy to treat peripheral nervous injuries, this study aimed at evaluating nociception and edema in an experimental sciatic nerve compression model with Wistar rats treated ...

Landscape review about the decision to euthanize a compromised pig

open access: yesPorcine Health Management
AbstractTimely euthanasia of a compromised pig in farming practice has been identified as a critical topic in veterinary medicine. The questions ‘why and when are pigs euthanized’ and ‘what influences the decision making process’ need to be answered to improve the situation. In the past five years, work addressing these issues has been published in the

Engineering Concentration‐Dependent Intravitreal Mobility via Cyclic Arginine‐Enriched Nanocarrier Surface Modification: In Vivo Proof‐of‐Concept in a Porcine Large Animal Model

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, Hammer et al. highlight cyclic‐arginine surface engineering as a highly biocompatible, controllable, and concentration‐dependent regulator of intravitreal nanoparticle mobility in vivo in a translational large animal model. The cyclic arginine surface‐modification supports the development of next‐generation biomaterials for long‐acting ...

Photovoltaic Stimulation of Mouse and Pig Retina With Pyrolytic Carbon Microelectrodes Integrated on High‐Density Silicon Solar Cell Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we fabricate photovoltaic retinal implants with pyrolytic carbon electrodes and test their ability to stimulate mouse and pig retinas when illuminated with near‐infrared light. We find increased spiking activity in both animal models compared to spontaneous activity and TTX controls and analyze the spike amplitude, latency and frequency.
