Loss of primary cilia promotes EphA2‐mediated endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in the ovarian tumor microenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of primary cilia in endothelial cells promotes EndMT and vascular abnormalities in the ovarian tumor microenvironment through EphA2 activation. Using human samples, in vitro models, and endothelial‐specific Kif3a‐knockout mice, we show that primary cilia loss drives the acquisition of cancer‐associated fibroblast‐like phenotypes, thereby ...

Conundrum in an asthma exacerbation [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Case Reports, 2016
A 66-year-old man, an asthmatic, presented with symptoms suggestive of an acute exacerbation of asthma. His arterial blood gas revealed type 1 respiratory failure (PaO2<8 kPa or 60 mm Hg with normal or low PaCO2) with a compensated lactic acidosis. He was treated for an asthma exacerbation and sepsis. Despite treatment, his respiratory rate remained

Cytomegalovirus infection is common in prostate cancer and antiviral therapies inhibit progression in disease models

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Human cytomegalovirus infection is common in normal prostate epithelium, prostate tumor tissue, and prostate cancer cell lines. CMV promotes cell survival, proliferation, and androgen receptor signaling. Anti‐CMV pharmaceutical compounds in clinical use inhibited cell expansion in prostate cancer models in vitro and in vivo, motivating investigation ...

Association of high‐dose radioactive iodine therapy with PPM1D‐mutated clonal hematopoiesis in older individuals

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In thyroid cancer patients, high‐dose (≥7.4 GBq) radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) was associated with a higher prevalence of clonal hematopoiesis (variant allele frequency >2%) in individuals aged ≥50 years (OR = 2.44). In silico analyses showed that truncating PPM1D mutations conferred a selective advantage under these conditions.

Acute exacerbations of COPD

open access: yesSwiss Medical Weekly, 2003
Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) are a common cause of morbidity and mortality. There is a need for a standardised definition of an exacerbation of COPD. The common aetiological factors are bacterial, viral infection and air pollutants. Exacerbations of COPD may adversely affect the natural history of COPD.

Bioengineering facets of the tumor microenvironment in 3D tumor models: insights into cellular, biophysical and biochemical interactions

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The tumor microenvironment is a dynamic, multifaceted complex system of interdependent cellular, biochemical, and biophysical components. Three‐dimensional in vitro models of the tumor microenvironment enable a better understanding of these interactions and their impact on cancer progression and therapeutic resistance.

Possible role of human ribonuclease dicer in the regulation of R loops

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
R loops play an important role in regulating key cellular processes such as replication, transcription, centromere stabilization, or control of telomere length. However, the unscheduled accumulation of R loops can cause many diseases, including cancer, and neurodegenerative or inflammatory disorders. Interestingly, accumulating data indicate a possible
