Many fluid flow problems cannot be solved mathematically because of the complex nature of the equations involved and of the boundaries of the flow regime. Many others can be solved only after certain simplifying assumptions have been made and it is then necessary to verify the solution through experiments. In the first group of problems it goes without

The Experimental Mechanics of Microcracks
1992The experimental mechanics of small cracks require high spatial resolution measurements that are only obtained by using the scanning electron microscope. This paper describes how cyclic loading stages developed for the scanning electron microscope have been used successfully to study growing microcracks, both at ambient and elevated temperatures.
