The Social Science Journal, 1998Given the great historical distance between scientific explanation as Aristotle and Hempel saw it, I examine and appraise important similarities and differences between the two approaches, especially the inclination to take deduction itself as the very model of scientific knowledge. I argue that we have good reasons to reject this inclination.

Proceedings of the 2007 ACM conference on Recommender systems, 2007This thesis focuses on explanations of recommendations. Explanations can have many advantages, from inspiring user trust to helping users make good decisions. We have identified seven different aims of explanations, and in this thesis we will consider how explanations can be optimized for some of these aims.
