An instance of umbral methods in representation theory: the parking function module

open access: yes, 2008
We test the umbral methods introduced by Rota and Taylor within the theory of representation of symmetric group. We define a simple bijection between the set of all parking functions of length $n$ and the set of all noncrossing partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\

CanICA: Model-based extraction of reproducible group-level ICA patterns from fMRI time series [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Spatial Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is an increasingly used data-driven method to analyze functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. To date, it has been used to extract meaningful patterns without prior information.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Feasibility of glycated haemoglobin target-setting in adults with diabetes: A mixed-methods study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
BackgroundHbA1c targets guide diabetes management to reduce complications, yet their psychological effects are poorly understood. This feasibility study evaluated the practicality of conducting a definitive trial evaluating the impact of explicit HbA1c ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Facilitating Group Decision-Making: Facilitator's Subjective Theories on Group Coordination

open access: yesForum: Qualitative Social Research, 2008
A key feature of group facilitation is motivating and coordinating people to perform their joint work. This paper focuses on group coordination which is a prerequisite to group effectiveness, especially in complex tasks.

Trees of semi-simple algebras

open access: yes, 2005
To a tree of semi-simple algebras we associate a qurve (or formally smooth algebra) S. We introduce a Zariski- and etale quiver describing the finite dimensional representations of S. In particular, we show that all quotient varieties of the etale quiver

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
