An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

The exposome for kidney stones [PDF]

open access: yesUrolithiasis, 2015
The exposome is the assembly and measure of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime. An individual's exposures begin before birth and include insults from environmental and occupational sources. The associated field is called exposomics, which relies on the application of internal and external exposure assessment methods.

From John Snow to omics: the long journey of environmental epidemiology

open access: yes, 2018
A major difference between infectious and non-communicable diseases is that infectious diseases typically have unique necessary causes whereas noncommunicable diseases have multiple causes which by themselves are usually neither necessary nor sufficient.

The search for the ultimate exercise countermeasure to preserve crew health and ensure mission success in long‐duration spaceflight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The current understanding of crew health maintenance is founded upon decades of physiological research conducted in terrestrial spaceflight analogues and in low Earth orbit, particularly on the International Space Station. However, as we progress towards the Lunar Gateway and interplanetary missions, it is imperative that the tools employed to

A general exposome factor explains individual differences in functional brain network topography and cognition in youth

open access: yesDevelopmental Cognitive Neuroscience
Childhood environments are critical in shaping cognitive neurodevelopment. With the increasing availability of large-scale neuroimaging datasets with deep phenotyping of childhood environments, we can now build upon prior studies that have considered ...

Lifestyle differences between co-twins are associated with decreased similarity in their internal and external exposome profiles

open access: yesScientific Reports
Whether differences in lifestyle between co-twins are reflected in differences in their internal or external exposome profiles remains largely underexplored.

Brain strain: Blood flow and metabolism in environmental extremes

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This narrative review compares and contrasts the most commonly encountered environmental stressors on human cerebrovascular functioning. From high altitude and space, extreme apnoea, heat and cold stress, the impact of these stressors on the regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen metabolism (CMRO2${\mathrm{CM}}{{\mathrm{R}}_ ...
