Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Capability of CORDEX RCMs in simulating extreme rainfall events over South africa

open access: yes, 2014
Includes bibliographical references. In South Africa, extreme rainfall events often lead to widespread destruction, damage infrastructure, displace communities, strain water management and even destroy lives.

State space modelling of extreme values with particle filters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
State space models are a flexible class of Bayesian model that can be used to smoothly capture non-stationarity. Observations are assumed independent given a latent state process so that their distribution can change gradually over time. Sequential Monte

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Modelling Extreme Multivariate Events

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1991
SUMMARY The classical treatment of multivariate extreme values is through componentwise ordering, though in practice most interest is in actual extreme events. Here the point process of observations which are extreme in at least one component is considered.

Climatic trends of extreme wave events caused by Arctic Cyclones in the western Arctic Ocean

open access: yes, 2021
The sea ice coverage in the summer Arctic Ocean from the Beaufort to Laptev Seas continues to decrease, and the largest waves in the western Arctic open waters are increasing year by year.

Urbanization in megacities increases the frequency of extreme precipitation events far more than their intensity

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2020
More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas (UN Population Division 2018 The World’s cities in 2018 (UN: New York)), which are especially vulnerable to climate extremes (Field et al 2012 Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and ...

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.
