Addressing the under-reporting of adverse drug reactions in public health programs controlling HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria: A prospective cohort study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
BACKGROUND:Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are a major clinical and public health problem world-wide. The prompt reporting of suspected ADRs to regulatory authorities to activate drug safety surveillance and regulation appears to be the most pragmatic ...

Facile supersaturation control strategies for regulating nucleation and crystal growth in membrane crystallisation

open access: yesSeparation and Purification Technology
The integration of crystallisation into membrane distillation has been proposed for brine mining as a method to effectively control primary nucleation which uses the excess supersaturation to create a new crystal phase. However, primary nucleation desaturates the solvent, subsequently introducing competition between crystal growth and nucleation ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

LLRF Control and Synchronization System of the ARES Facility

open access: yes, 2021
The linear accelerator ARES (Accelerator Research Experiment at SINBAD) is a new research facility at DESY. Electron bunches with a maximum repetition rate of 50 Hz are accelerated up to 155 MeV. The facility aims for ultra-stable sub-femtosecond arrival-

Comparing Various Designs of Bioretention for Rainwater Management and Microclimate Regulation: Implications for Residential Areas

open access: yesLand
Effective microclimate regulation and rainwater management have become critical challenges in residential environments. Bioretention (BR) facilities are widely applied low-impact development (LID) measures that provide co-benefits in runoff control and ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Design of a SMART Valve Testbed for Nuclear Thermal Dispatch

open access: yesEnergies
By the year 2050, the United States aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. To achieve this target, the licensing of the Light Water Reactor (LWR) fleet has been extended for 20 more years.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
