Characterisation of FAD-family folds using a machine learning approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and its derivatives play a crucial role in biological processes. They are major organic cofactors and electron carriers in both enzymatic activities and biochemical pathways. We have analysed the relationships between

Thermo‐Fluorescent Bactericidal Quantum Dots Based Smart Multifunctional Textiles via Molecular Surface Engineering and 3D‐Printed Interlocked Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile approach is presented for fabricating smart multifunctional textiles by integrating thermo‐fluorescent carbon dot/polymer nanocomposite coatings with 3D‐printed interlocked architectures. The fabrics exhibit temperature‐responsive fluorescence, durable hydrophobicity, strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and enhanced UV protection.

Ultrafast Structural Dynamics of BlsA, a Photoreceptor from the Pathogenic Bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Acinetobacter baumannii is an important human pathogen that can form biofilms and persist under harsh environmental conditions. Biofilm formation and virulence are modulated by blue light, which is thought to be regulated by a BLUF protein, BlsA.

Hierarchically Engineered Multi‐Enzyme Nanoreactors for in vitro Drug Biosynthesis and Pathway Transplantation Into Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchically structured metal–organic framework (eMIL) is shown to host the complete six‐enzyme biosynthesis pathway for the anti‐cancer pigment violacein, reshaping reaction dynamics and multiplying in vitro yields. eMIL nanoreactors deliver this reconstituted bacterial multi‐protein system into mammalian cells, where cell‐derived substrates and ...

Fads in Psychiatry [PDF]

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 2013
Dr Edward Shorter' argues that part of the reason for the numerous fads that characterize psychiatry is the way our subject changes its paradigms, and wipes the slate clean each time it does so. The examples he gives are the asylum era, followed by the psychoanalytic era, ending in the era of psychopharmacology, neuroscience, and genetics.

The intrinsic fluorescence of FAD and its application in analytical chemistry: a review

open access: yesMethods and Applications in Fluorescence, 2016
This review (with 106 references) mainly deals with the analytical applications of flavin-adenine dinucleotide (FAD) fluorescence. In the first section, the spectroscopic properties of this compound are reviewed at the light of his different acid–base ...
