A Merton Model Approach to Assessing the Default Risk of UK Public Companies [PDF]
This paper shows how a Merton-model approach can be used to develop measures of the probability of failure of quoted UK companies. Probability estimates are constructed for a group of failed companies and their properties as leading indicators of failure

Evaluating research and researchers by the journal impact factor: is it better than coin flipping?
The journal impact factor (JIF) is the average of the number of citations of the papers published in a journal, calculated according to a specific formula; it is extensively used for the evaluation of research and researchers. The method assumes that all

Transition probabilities and measurement statistics of postselected ensembles
It is well-known that a quantum measurement can enhance the transition probability between two quantum states. Such a measurement operates after preparation of the initial state and before postselecting for the final state.

The Decoding Failure Probability of MDPC Codes [PDF]
Moderate Density Parity Check (MDPC) codes are defined here as codes which have a parity-check matrix whose row weight is $O(\sqrt{n})$ where $n$ is the length $n$ of the code. They can be decoded like LDPC codes but they decode much less errors than LDPC codes: the number of errors they can decode in this case is of order $ (\sqrt{n})$.

Structural Reliability Analysis Using Stochastic Finite Element Method Based on Krylov Subspace
The stochastic finite element method is an important tool for structural reliability analysis. In order to improve the calculation efficiency, a stochastic finite element method based on the Krylov subspace is proposed for the static reliability analysis

Elements of drilling equipment are subjected to random loads with very high amplitudes during operation. Classical methods of probabilistic calculation of gearings don’t allow us to estimate the probability of their failure taking into account the real ...

Predicting Criminal Recidivism Using "Split Population" Survival Time Models [PDF]
In this paper we develop a survival time model in which the probability of eventual failure is less than one, and in which both the probability of eventual failure and the timing of failure depend (separately) on individual characteristics. We apply this

Conditional probability of multiple coronary graft failure
To assess the potential capability of using artery-specific factors to predict the success of coronary bypass grafting, we classified each graft according to the type of graft (mammary, single vein, or multiple skip vein), the degree of obstruction in the native coronary artery, and the size of the grafted artery.
