Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Body Fat Maldistribution Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients Attending Care and Treatment Clinics in Dar es salaam Municipal Hospitals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Long term side effects of HAART such as body fat mal-distribution have not been reported in Tanzania, since care and treatment began in 2004. Likewise perceptions and attitude of HIV/AIDS patients on treatment on their body fat mal-distribution has not ...

Identification of body fat tissues in MRI data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In recent years non-invasive medical diagnostic techniques have been used widely in medical investigations. Among the various imaging modalities available, Magnetic Resonance Imaging is very attractive as it produces multi-slice images where the contrast

Dietary fat oxidation as a function of body fat [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2008
It is hypothesized that low dietary fat oxidation makes subjects prone to weight gain. The aim of the study was to determine dietary fat oxidation in normal, overweight, and obese subjects. The subjects were 38 women and 18 men with a mean (+/-SD) age of 30+/-12 y and a body mass index (in kg/m2) of 25+/-4 (range: 18-39).

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Hormonal control of protein synthesis in the fat body of Leptinotarsa decemlineata [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
This thesis deals with the hormonal control of protein synthesis in the female fat body of Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. The results are discussed in relation to reproduction (obtained by rearing under long day conditions) and the preparation for ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Small mosquitoes, large implications: crowding and starvation affects gene expression and nutrient accumulation in Aedes aegypti

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2015
Background Environmental factors such as temperature, nutrient availability, and larval density determine the outcome of postembryonic development in mosquitoes.

A comparative study of fat body morphology in five mosquito species

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2011
The insect fat body plays major roles in the intermediary metabolism, in the storage and transport of haemolymph compounds and in the innate immunity.
