Spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) can tolerate a wide range of salinity fluctuations. It is a good model for studying environmental salinity adaptation. Lipid metabolism plays an important role in salinity adaptation in fish. To elucidate the mechanism of

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

A pathway-directed positive growth restoration assay to facilitate the discovery of lipid A and fatty acid biosynthesis inhibitors in Acinetobacter baumannii. [PDF]
Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606 can grow without lipooligosaccharide (LOS). Lack of LOS can result from disruption of the early lipid A biosynthetic pathway genes lpxA, lpxC or lpxD. Although LOS itself is not essential for growth of A. baumannii ATCC

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

In flavonoid biosynthesis, the phenylpropanoid branch has received increasing attention, but little attention has been paid to the fatty acid β-oxidation branch involved in providing the necessary malonyl-Coenzyme A (CoA) moieties of flavonoids. Here, we

Transcriptome responses of Lactobacillus acetotolerans F28 to a short and long term ethanol stress
Lactobacillus acetotolerans is a major microbe contributing to the Chinese liquor fermentation with unknown function. It can be grown well in a high concentration of ethanol. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed on L.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

A conditional mutant of the fatty acid synthase unveils unexpected cross talks in mycobacterial lipid metabolism [PDF]
Unlike most bacteria, mycobacteria rely on the multi-domain enzyme eukaryote-like fatty acid synthase I (FAS I) to make fatty acids de novo. These metabolites are precursors of the biosynthesis of most of the lipids present both in the complex ...
