Secondary mineral formation associated with respiration of nontronite, NAu-1 by iron reducing bacteria

open access: yesGeochemical Transactions, 2005
Experimental batch and miscible-flow cultures were studied in order to determine the mechanistic pathways of microbial Fe(III) respiration in ferruginous smectite clay, NAu-1.

Combined 5‐aminolevulinic acid and ferric ammonium citrate treatment promotes hair follicle growth by activating dermal papilla cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
5‐Aminolevulinic acid combined with ferric ammonium citrate (5‐ALA/FAC) stimulates dermal papilla cell activity and promotes hair follicle growth. The treatment enhances ERK and AKT signaling, increases hair‐inductive gene expression, and restores dermal papilla function suppressed by dihydrotestosterone and oxidative stress, resulting in enhanced hair

Growth of microaerophilic Fe(II)‐oxidizing bacteria using Fe(II) produced by Fe(III) photoreduction

open access: yes, 2022
Iron(II) (Fe(II)) can be formed by abiotic Fe(III) photoreduction, particularly when Fe(III) is organically complexed. Light‐influenced environments often overlap or even coincide with oxic or microoxic geochemical conditions, for example, in sediments ...

Absence of solid solution between Fe(II) and Mg(II) hydroxides and consequences on formation of fougerite and smectites [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2019
As there exists extended solid solutions between ferrous and magnesian silicates, experiments were conducted to check if ferrous and magnesian hydroxides can co-precipitate in a solid solution. Results show that no solid solution forms and instead Fe(II)

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Transient O2 pulses direct Fe crystallinity and Fe(III)-reducer gene expression within a soil microbiome

open access: yesMicrobiome, 2018
Background Many environments contain redox transition zones, where transient oxygenation events can modulate anaerobic reactions that influence the cycling of iron (Fe) and carbon (C) on a global scale.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Investigation of three-liquid-phase extraction systems for the separation of Ti(IV), Fe(III) and Mg(II)

open access: yes, 2010
Three-liquid-phase extraction system (TES) composed of an organic solvent-rich top phase, a polymer-rich middle phase and a salt-rich bottom phase has been considered to be a promising method of isolation and separation of multi-component. In this paper,
