Dissociation between complete hippocampal context memory formation and context fear acquisition

open access: yes, 2017
© 2017 Leake et al. Rodents require a minimal time period to explore a context prior to footshock to display plateau-level context fear at test. To investigate whether this rapid fear plateau reflects complete memory formation within that short time ...

Learning and nicotine interact to increase CREB phosphorylation at the jnk1 promoter in the hippocampus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Nicotine is known to enhance long-term hippocampus dependent learning and memory in both rodents and humans via its activity at nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors (nAChRs).

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Spatial and single‐nuclei transcriptomics reveals idiosyncratic and generic patterns in papillary and anaplastic thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Matched spatial transcriptomics and single‐nuclei RNA‐seq were generated for anaplastic and BRAFV600E papillary thyroid cancers revealing generic and tumor‐specific states occurring in cancer cells and in the tumor microenvironment. In this context, cancer dedifferentiation mirrored organoid maturation through ordered thyroid marker gain/loss ...

Attenuating human fear memory retention with minocycline: a randomized placebo-controlled trial

open access: yesTranslational Psychiatry
Pavlovian fear conditioning is widely used as a pre-clinical model to investigate methods for prevention and treatment of anxiety and stress-related disorders.

Differential activation of anatomically defined neuronal subpopulations in the amygdala during fear conditioning and extinction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The amygdala is a key structure of the neuronal circuitry mediating expression and extinction of conditioned fear. However, fear memories are thought to be encoded in a larger network comprising the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the ...

Attitudes of cancer patients toward ctDNA‐based liquid biopsy for follow‐up

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This mixed‐methods study explored cancer patients' experiences, knowledge, and preferences regarding ctDNA‐based liquid biopsy for follow‐up. Awareness of ctDNA was low and recall of previous liquid biopsy was imperfect, yet acceptance was high.

Overexpression of mineralocorticoid receptors does not affect memory and anxiety-like behavior in female mice

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2015
Mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs) have been implicated in behavioral adaptation and learning and memory. Since – at least in humans - MR function seems to be sex-dependent, we examined the behavioral relevance of MR in female mice exhibiting transgenic ...

Dissociation of affective modulation of recollective and perceptual experience following amygdala damage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
It has been suggested that similar neural mechanisms may underlie the affective modulation of both recollective and perceptual experience. A case is reported of a patient who has bilateral amygdala damage and marked impairment in the perception of ...

An outer membrane vesicle‐associated two‐track model for enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis oncogenesis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis is a gut bacterium linked to bowel cancer. We propose that its toxin acts along two routes: at the cell surface, cutting the adhesion protein E‐cadherin and triggering inflammation; and inside the cell, delivered by bacterial vesicles, switching on NOD1 and cancer stem cell programs.
