Control of fed-batch fermentations

Biotechnology Advances, 1999
Fed-batch fermentation is used to prevent or reduce substrate-associated growth inhibition by controlling nutrient supply. Here we review the advances in control of fed-batch fermentations. Simple exponential feeding and inferential methods are examined, as are newer methods based on fuzzy control and neural networks.

Fed-batch cultivation of Wautersia eutropha

Bioresource Technology, 2008
Batch kinetics of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis in a bioreactor under controlled conditions of pH and dissolved oxygen gave a biomass of 14 g l(-1) with a PHB concentration of 6.1 g l(-1) in 60 h. The data of the batch kinetics was used to develop a mathematical model, which was then extrapolated to fed-batch by incorporating the dilution due to ...

Feedback optimization of fed‐batch fermentation

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1987
AbstractThe problem of feedback optimization of the feed rate for fed‐batch fermentation processes is formulated in the framework of singular control theory and switching hypersurfaces. Using four differential balance equations that describe a general class of fedbatch processes and a general objective function to be minimized, it is shown that under ...

Fed-Batch Cultures

2013
Many, if not most, industrially important fermentation and bioreactor operations are carried out in fed-batch mode, producing a wide variety of products. In spite of this, there is no single book that deals with fed-batch operations. This is the first book that presents all the necessary background material regarding the 'what, why and how' of optimal ...

Calorimetric control of fed‐batch fermentations

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1990
AbstractMeasurements of the heat produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 426 were used in conjunction with elemental and enthalpic balances to control fed‐batch fermentations. A proportional control using the ratio of carbon dioxide evolution rate to heat production resulted in high biomass yields and minimal ethanol production.

Dynamic reoptimization of a fed‐batch fermentor

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1999
Traditionally, fed-batch biochemical process optimization and control use complicated models and off-line optimizers with no on-line model adaptation and re-optimization. This work demonstrates the applicability, effectiveness, and economic potential, of a simple phenomenological model for modeling, and a novel optimizer for on-line re-optimization and

Fed-batch bioproduction of spectinomycin

2007
Actinomycetes produce about 67% of the known antibiotics covering a wide range of chemical structures. However, their filamentous growth present several problems during industrial processes. Among these problems oxygen transfer limitation is critical.

Feed Optimization in Fed-Batch Culture

2013
Fed-batch processes are a current preference for the production of recombinant proteins in mammalian cells. The use of nutrient feeding prevents the depletion of important medium components and results in improved culture longevity and high cell and product yields.

Industrial Fed-Batch Fermentation Monitoring

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1997
Abstract A multivariate statistical model is developed and used for fault diagnosis of an industrial fed-batch fermentation process. Process faults may be detected on-line using existing measurements. In the applied approach the modelling is entirely data driven. Several data sets (25) are used to develop a model for cultivation behaviour. This model

Supervision of fed-batch fermentations

Chemical Engineering Journal, 1999
Process faults may be detected on-line using existing measurements based upon modelling that is entirely data driven. A multivariate statistical model is developed and used for fault diagnosis of an industrial fed-batch fermentation process. Data from several (25) batches are used to develop a model for cultivation behaviour.
