The Snowball Effect in Fed-Batch Bioreactions

Biotechnology Progress, 2003
The bioreactor will play an important role in future biological manufacturing. For economic profit, important profiles of the feed rate in fed-batch cultures have been discussed. Unfortunately, the optimal feed rate is less robust. In these studies there exists the snowball effect in a substrate-inhibited bioprocess, in which substrate is accumulated ...

Fed-batch and continuous culture

1990
Abstract A variety of techniques has been developed for the submerged culture of microorganisms. Batch and fed-batch culture have been part of the art of fermentation since antiquity and are still used today for most industrial fermentations.

Optimal nonsingular control of fed‐batch fermentation

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1991
AbstractPresented is a new simple method for multidimensional optimization of fed‐batch fermentations based on the use of the orthogonal collocation technique. Considered is the problem of determination of optimal programs for fermentor temperature, substrate concentration in feed, feeding profile, and process duration.

Biological sulphide oxidation in a fed‐batch reactor

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1995
AbstractThis study shows that, in a sulphide‐oxidizing bioreactor with a mixed culture of Thiobacilli, the formation of sulphur and sulphate as end‐products from the oxidation of sulphide can be controiledinstantaneously and reversibiy by the amount of oxygen supplied. It was found that at sulphide loading rates of up to 2.33 mmol7/L · h, both products

Fed-batch techniques in microbial processes

2005
This article focuses on the recent world-wide advances of the biotechnology of the increasingly important fed-batch (or semi-batch) cultivation technique used in microbial processes. The history and characteristics of the fed-batch technique in microbial reactions are reviewed and examples of those fed-batch operations are cited which have greatly ...

Optimization of Fed-batch Biotechnical Processes

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992
Abstract Linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control theory is applied to the problem of optimizing the time-dependent process conditions affecting the fed-batch production of biomass. Two linear models are derived which are suitable for model-based optimization. Neither model assumes a particular time behaviour of the specific growth rate.

Sauerstoff-fed-batch: Prozeßführung — Fermenter — Meßgeräte

1981
