Many, if not most, industrially important fermentation and bioreactor operations are carried out in fed-batch mode, producing a wide variety of products. In spite of this, there is no single book that deals with fed-batch operations. This is the first book that presents all the necessary background material regarding the 'what, why and how' of optimal ...

Fermentation kinetics of recombinant yeast in batch and fed‐batch cultures
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1992AbstractFed‐batch cultures of recombinant microorganisms have attracted attention as they can separate cell growth stage from cloned‐gene expression phase during fermentations. In this work, the effect of different glucose feeding strategies on cell growth and cloned gene expression was studied during aerobic fed‐batch fermentations of recombinant ...

Growth of Photorhabdus luminescens in batch and glucose fed-batch culture
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2000Photorhabdus luminescens, a bacterial symbiont of entomopathogenic biocontrol nematodes, was grown in batch and glucose fed-batch culture. The cell density, bioluminescence, production of antibiotic substances, number of cells with inclusion bodies, glucose concentration and oxygen uptake rate were recorded.

Improve Production of Pullulanase of Bacillus subtilis in Batch and Fed-Batch Cultures
Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2020Pullulanase is a debranching enzyme that cleaves explicitly α-1,6 glycosidic bonds, which is widely used in starch saccharification, production of glucose, maltose, and bioethanol. The thermal-resistant pullulanase is isolated from a variety of microorganisms; however, the lack of industrial production of pullulanase has hindered the transformation of ...

The Snowball Effect in Fed-Batch Bioreactions
Biotechnology Progress, 2003The bioreactor will play an important role in future biological manufacturing. For economic profit, important profiles of the feed rate in fed-batch cultures have been discussed. Unfortunately, the optimal feed rate is less robust. In these studies there exists the snowball effect in a substrate-inhibited bioprocess, in which substrate is accumulated ...

Supervision of fed-batch fermentations
Chemical Engineering Journal, 1999Process faults may be detected on-line using existing measurements based upon modelling that is entirely data driven. A multivariate statistical model is developed and used for fault diagnosis of an industrial fed-batch fermentation process. Data from several (25) batches are used to develop a model for cultivation behaviour.

Ammonia inhibition of hybridomas propagated in batch, fed‐batch, and continuous culture
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1994AbstractThe nature and temporal development of ammonia inhbition were investigated in batch, fed‐batch, and continuous cultures. Significant inhibition was observed when cells were inoculated in serum‐containing or chemically defined medium containing more than 2 mM of ammonia.

Fed-batch reactor is based on feeding of a growth limiting nutrient substrate to a culture. Cell growth and fermentation can be controlled by the feeding strategy. The fed-batch strategy is typically used to reach a high cell density in the bioreactor or mimic a continuous culture. Mostly the feed solution is highly concentrated.

Batch to Batch Iterative Learning Control of a Fed-Batch Fermentation Process
2012Batch to batch iterative learning control of a fed-batch fermentation process is studied in this paper. Taking the immediate previous batch as the reference batch, a linearised model relating the deviations in the control profiles with the deviations in the quality variable trajectories is obtained.

Shear Sensitivity of Hybridoma Cells in Batch, Fed‐Batch, and Continuous Cultures
Biotechnology Progress, 1990AbstractPreviously, we observed that CRL‐8018 hybridoma cells were more sensitive to well‐defined viscometric shear during the lag and stationary phases than during the exponential phase of batch cultures. Some potential hypotheses for explaining the increase in shear sensitivity are (1) nutrient limitations that result in a decrease in production of ...
